The background of Galán's historic triumph

Pure history. Colombian Daniel Galán (113 °) defeated Alex de Miñaur (23 °) 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4, defeated for the first time a player within the Top 30 of the ATP ranking and advanced to the third round Masters 1000 where he will face the Italian Lorenzo Sonego to continue making history and leave Colombian tennis at the top.

Colombia is celebrating and has plenty of reasons. Galán’s victory in the previous round against Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild had already left a lot of cloth to cut: He was the first Colombian tennis player to win a match in the main draw of a Masters 1000 since his compatriot Santiago Giraldo did it in the Los Cabos tournament in 2016 against Sam Querrey (29th).

But the thing did not stop there. After his presentation in Miami, he had to face the young promise of Australian tennis, Alex de Miñaur, located in position 23 of the ATP. and with whom he had an adverse history of 1 to 0 (defeat in the 2019 Davis Cup). With a game more than worked and demonstrating high-flying tennis during several passages of the meeting, the South American was victorious and, in this way, he continued to magnify the story: first victory against a tennis player located within the 30 best in the world and, in addition, the first Colombian to achieve two consecutive victories in a Masters 1000 tournament since that of his countryman Alejandro Falla in Miami 2015.

Already located in the third round, Galán will have to face Italian Lorenzo Sonego (34 °), who has just obtained a victory against local Bjorn Fratangelo by 6-4 and 7-6 (5), to continue increasing his name and continue leaving Colombian tennis at the top.
