World tennis had great news on April 6: Roger Federer will play the Masters 1000 in Madrid, in the dust tour prior to Roland Garros. It is the first tournament confirmed by the Swiss after his presence in March at the ATP 250 in Doha.
Federer played only one tournament in 2021, after a year off. It was at the ATP 250 in Doha, where he beat Evans and lost in the quarterfinals to Basilashvilli. The Swiss had said that his goal was in the second half of the year: US Open, Wimbledon and the Olympics. Therefore, his presence on the brick dust tour was uncertain.
The Madrid Masters 1000, which will also feature Djokovic, Medvedev, Nadal, Thiem, Tsitsipas, Zverev, Rublev and Schwartzman, will be played from May 2 to 9. The following week is Rome and Roland Garros would start on May 23.
