Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez will get into the ring against the Cuban Sullivan Barrera in his first fight under the flag of Golden Boy Promotions in the semi-heavy division, according to Jorge Ebro from The Miami Herald.
Ramirez became the first Mexican, prior to Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, to become world champion at 168 pounds and is ready to return, after almost 6 months of absence from his last fight in which he defeated by knockout Alfonso Lopez.
“We must move forward. There’s no more. I got out of a situation and now I look forward, “he said in an interview with Ebro. “I am very happy with my career, for all the satisfactions that boxing has given me. All this path that has brought me here I see it as an apprenticeship. ”
For its part, Barrier is close to serving two years without getting into the ring, after he fell by unanimous decision to Jesse hart on June 15, 2019.
This will be the third contest of the Left handed at 175 pounds, where he seeks to become world champion, after 12 matches at 168.
“It is an honor to have been the first Mexican to be world champion at that (super middleweight) weight,” he mentioned. “Represent Mexico It is the greatest thing and that people believe in me. My country had never had a champion in that division. I was and now I want to continue making history. I’m going to look for another title ”.
Canelo, Beterbiev, Bivol or Kovalev?
Gilberto Ramirez vacated his scepter in the super middleweight to open the way in the light heavyweight and now under the tutelage of Golden boy will look to improve his undefeated record of 41 fights in a division dominated by undefeated Russians Artur Beterbiev (CMB Y FIB) Y Dimitry Bivol (AMB).
However, none of the fighters scare the Left handed, which ensures that in the future he sees himself as the unified champion of 175 pounds, ending with the marks of the Russians.
“I see myself as champion and unified, I think those fights are going to happen,” he commented. “I want all the titles, I want what they have. I feel sorry for them but Lefty Ramírez there is the light heavy division and it will conquer everything ”.
Another that has sounded like a rival is Saul Canelo Alvarez, but the latter has reiterated that he is not going to go up to 175 pounds because it gives a lot of advantage and he does not like the idea of fighting against a Mexican either.
“That fight is going to happen, people ask a lot for that fight,” he confessed. “Canelo rose to fight Kovalev and why not with him Lefty Ramirez. I want to be seen as an idol, as a legend. I want to leave a legacy to the fans who follow me and believe in me. ”
Finally, Ramirez closed by saying that he would love to have a former champion like Sergey Kovalev.
“That is another one of the fights that people want to see. For me it would be an honor to fight with him ”, he pointed out. “It has had a good trajectory, I have followed it, but you have to train to beat your idols. I want to be world champion, for my family, my children who make me get up every day. ”
