MADRID – Lionel Messi, Argentine player for Barcelona, became the top scorer in the Copa del Rey finals this Saturday after beating Telmo Zarra, who accumulated eight goals in the four finals he played between 1943 and 1955.
With the double that marked Athletic, which Barça defeated 4-0, Messi reached nine goals in the ten finals he has played since the 2008-09 season. In addition, he achieved another record and became the fourth highest all-time scorer in the competition.
He reached 56 goals and beat Valencia player Edmundo Suárez ‘Mundo’, who added 55. Ahead, Messi only has three players: Guillermo Gorostiza, who scored 64 in the ranks of Racing Ferrol, Athletic, Valencia and Baracaldo; José Samitier, who reached 69 at Barcelona and Real Madrid; and Telmo Zarra, king of the Cup scorers with 81 goals in 74 games with the Athletic shirt.
