Guido Pella and Kei Nishikori they starred in the match of the day at the Count of Godó. The Japanese after losing the first set, turned the result and eliminated the Argentine 4-6, 7-6 (4) and 6-2. In the second round, the former world No. 4 will go against the Chilean Cristian Garin.
Placed 50th in the rankings, Pella lost in his debut in all four tournaments in 2021. He played top-level tennis in the first set. Already in the second set, he wasted good advantages, such as 3-0 in the tiebreak, and Nishikori (39th) raised his tennis and was able to level the match.
In the third, the Japanese took advantage of his opportunities with Pella’s serve and quickly took a 4-0 lead. He almost got 5-0 and the winner served, but the Argentine came back two games, who thus lost in the debut in the four tournaments played this season.
The Bahian left-hander yielded to Borna Coric in the first round of the Australian Open, against Egor Gerasimov in Cagliari, with Lucas Pouille in Monte-Carlo and now against Nishikori in Barcelona. In addition, he won one match and lost another in the ATP Cup played with the Argentine team in Australia.
Nishikori owns a record of 23 wins out of 29 games played in Barcelona. The Japanese achieved two titles in that ATP 500, in 2014 and 2015.
Thus, Nishikori will face Garin, the No. 13 favorite of the tournament, on Wednesday in the second duel against each other. The only antecedent favors the Chilean, who won very easily in the Hamburg opening last year, also on clay.
