Both the NBA like the Major League Baseball (United States) suspended matches of this day on Monday due to a fatal police shooting that occurred this Sunday in a suburb of Minneapolis, the most populous city in the state of Minnesota. In this shooting, an African-American person lost his life, so the basketball league decided to suspend the game between Minnesota Timbertwolves and Brooklyn Nets, while Major League Baseball suspended play between the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox.
“The National Basketball Association announced today (Monday) that in light of the tragic events in the Minneapolis area yesterday, tonight’s game between the Brooklyn Nets and the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Target Center has been postponed,” said the most important basketball league in the world in an official statement. This suspension (like the baseball game) was due to the death of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old who lost his life after a police shooting in a suburb of Minneapolis on Sunday.
Wright’s mother told the crowd that her son had called her to tell her that the police had ordered him to stop her vehicle, according to local media. The AFP Agency was also able to add that Katie Wright said she heard police officers tell her son to drop the phone and then one of the officers cut the call. Shortly after, his son’s girlfriend told him that his son had been killed.
Police officers ordered the driver (Daunte Wright) of the vehicle to stop for a traffic violation. When they discovered that he had an outstanding arrest warrant, they tried to arrest him. Wright tried to return to his car and one of the policemen shot him and the young man died at the scene, according to the Brooklyn Center Police Department.
Minneapolis is the same city where George Floyd died in 2020 after a former white police officer, Derek Chauvin, applied police abuse when detaining him. In recent days, the city was revolutionized by the trial against Chauvin, accused of causing the death of Floyd, in a very media case in the world related to the protests against racism. The process should last until at least next Monday, said the judge presiding over the trial, Peter Cahill. In addition, in the last hours it was reported that the police dispersed a demonstration with tear gas in the Brooklyn Center area.
Release from Major League Baseball and Timberwolves
Major League Baseball, for its part, noted that “out of respect for the tragic events that occurred yesterday at the Brooklyn Center, and following additional details on this evolving situation, the Minnesota Twins have decided that the best for our fans, staff , players and community is not to play today’s game (Monday) ”. While the NBA Timberwolves wrote in a statement: “The tragic event yesterday (Sunday), which involved the life of Daunte Wright, once again leaves our community in mourning.”
