MADRID – Zinedine Zidane believes that the rumor that UEFA could disqualify Real Madrid from the Champions League for leading the European Super League project is “absurd”.
The president of Madrid, Florentino Pérez, was at the center of the negotiations of the Superliga project that was born on Sunday and that fell apart just two days later when most of the 12 founding clubs threw in the towel for various reasons.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has been very critical of the project and some media pointed out that the possibility of disqualifying Madrid from the current Champions League as punishment was even contemplated.
However, Zidane made it clear that this rumor is “absurd” and that he remains focused on preparing his squad for the first leg of the semifinals against Chelsea next week.
“We have the right to play the Champions League, it is absurd, and we are going to prepare for that,” said the Madrid coach in the run-up to the match against Real Betis.
Similarly, the white coach rejected the possibility that there may be retaliation against his club through arbitrations.
“None, we are going to prepare. I think there are many things that have been said and we are going to play because we have the right to play and the referee is going to do it as he has always been, ”said Zidane.
For the match against Betis, Zidane confirmed the presence of Luka Modric and Eden Hazard, but ruled out Toni Kroos, who has still not recovered from his muscular discomfort.
Zidane was also positive regarding the recovery of Sergio Ramos after the captain overcame Covid-19.
“He’s close to it and I’m happy for him. We always want him with us, ”said the Frenchman.
Finally, Zidane threw balls out once more about his future when he was asked about the recent words of Florentino Pérez in which he assured that he could not imagine a Madrid without Zidane.
“I don’t know what is going to happen in months and I look at the day to day. We will talk about the future and what is going to happen. With Florentino we talk from time to time and now. He comes here sometimes to see the team and nothing has changed. What he wants is for us to focus on tomorrow’s game ”, concluded Zidane.
