Belo Horizonte (EFE) – Brazilian Atlético Mineiro beat Colombia’s América de Cali 2-1 this Tuesday in Belo Horizonte with two scores from the forward Hulk, and with four points he went on to lead Group H of the Copa Libertadores at the end of the second day.
The Brazilian international Hulk, who was in debt to the Mineiro fans since his signing and had differences with coach Cuca, entered the second half and scored the winning goals, the first from a penalty.
Luis Fernando Sánchez discounted for the Colombian team.
The match between Mineiro and América was played without an audience at the Mineirao stadium in Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Gerais (southeast).
On the first matchday, the Brazilians drew 1-1 in Caracas with La Guaira, while América fell 0-2 in Cali against the Paraguayan Cerro Porteño.
The first half began with dominance of the visiting team and Duván Vergara had the opportunity to open the scoring when the teams barely settled down.
But as the minutes passed the homeowners were imposing conditions and increased the pressure on the goal of Venezuelan Joel Graterol.
The Chilean Eduardo Vargas, the Venezuelan Jéfferson Savarino, the Argentine Nacho Fernández and the side Guilherme Arana, with a shot on the post, approached Mineiro, who had to settle for 0-0 at the end of the first half.
In minute 58, Hulk opened the scoring with a penalty that he suffered and sanctioned the Uruguayan referee Daniel Fedorczuk.
Four minutes later he extended with a goal after a Keno play with the right to a heel pass from Savarino.
The pupils of Argentine coach Juan Cruz Real discounted at 76 minutes after a failure by Tche Tche. Forward Luis Fernando Sánchez, who has just entered, defined without any option for goalkeeper Éverson.
In the final minutes, América cornered Mineiro and was about to draw with Vergara and Sánchez himself, who came to ask for a penalty for an alleged hand in the local team’s area.
Then Brazilian midfielder Nathan was sent off.
The second day of the group will close this Wednesday at the home of Cerro Porteño, which has 3 points, against La Guaira, which has not added.
On the third day Atlético Mineiro will host Cerro Porteño on May 4 and a day later América will visit La Guaira.
