Cristian Garin was eliminated from the Madrid Masters 1000 when he fell to Matteo Berrettini in three sets. Despite the Chilean’s good tournament, bitter taste because of the way he ended up being left out.
After a disputed first set, Garin broke in the 11th game and then kept his serve and won the set 7-5. In the second set, the Chilean broke in the third game and had to fight to keep his serve in the fourth. When he did it, when 3-1 was a given, it all seemed to be heading for a Masters 1000 semi-final for Garin.
Then the party changed hands. Berrettini was finding confidence, his blows strengthened and he did not lose a game again: they were 5 in a row to go from 1-3 to 6-3 and six in the third set for an imposing (although a liar, according to Berrettini’s own words ) 6-0.
The Italian, 10th in the world and 9th since Monday (he will surpass Diego Schwartzman), will play the semifinal against Casper Ruud this Saturday. On the other side of the table, Thiem and Zverev will define the finalist.
