(EFE) – Universidad Católica beat Argentinos Juniors 1-0 on Wednesday, prevented the local team from qualifying for the round of 16, and finished second in Group F of the Copa Libertadores, awaiting the match between Atlético Colombian National and Uruguayan National.
The team led by former defender Gabriel Milito, who played one hour with one less due to the expulsion of Gabriel Hauche, continues as the leader with nine points, followed by the Chileans with six points.
Atlético Nacional, who this Wednesday plays against Nacional, has four points and the Uruguayans only one whole.
Argentinos Juniors and Universidad Católica were erratic in the first minutes. They tried to come out playing from below with short passes and avoided quick transitions from defense to attack.
At 28 minutes Gabriel Hauche was sent off with a direct red for a strong infraction and left his team with ten.
A few seconds later, the Universidad Católica midfielder Marcelino Núñez had to be replaced due to a physical discomfort and in his place the Argentine Luciano Aued entered.
Argentinos Juniors managed to hide the numerical disadvantage and did not suffer any shocks until the break.
The beginning of the second half was similar to the beginning of the game: both teams had problems to build dangerous plays and the match was played mainly in the center of the field.
At 52 minutes, Jonathan Sandoval almost made it 1-0 in favor of Argentinos, but his good header was saved by Matías Dituro.
Uruguayan coach Gustavo Poyet moved the bench and sent Francisco Silva, Felipe Gutiérrez and Diego Valencia to the field to try to take advantage of the numerical advantage.
The changes took effect. At 74 minutes, Valencia, one of those admitted, headed down a cross from the left of the attack and the Argentine Fernando Zampedri defined first to score the 1-0.
At 82, forward Edson Puch was sent off for a double yellow and left the Chileans also with ten players.
The Bicho de La Paternal dominated during the last minutes and was close to getting the tie.
On the fifth day, Universidad Católica will visit Nacional on May 18 and Argentinos Juniors will host Atlético Nacional two days later.
