(ESPN.com) – Boca and River will meet again in a Superclásico: this Sunday, at 5:20 p.m., they will meet in the quarterfinals of the Professional League Cup.
The game will be played in La Bombonera and will be directed by Facundo Tello, with the televising of Fox Sports Premium and TNT Sports.
It will be the third clash between both teams in La Bombonera in 2021, after a 2020 where they did not measure each other.
The first two finished tied. On January 2 they equaled 2 to 2 for the Diego Armando Maradona Cup, while the last one, on March 14, finished 1 to 1. In this case, being a single direct elimination duel, in case of equality there will be penalties. The winner will advance to the semi-finals.
Boca comes to this instance after finishing second in Zone B of the contest. Xeneize comes from an irregular phase, where at times it was difficult for them to stay among the best four. Anyway, a date was qualified before the end.
River, meanwhile, got into the quarterfinals only on the last day by thrashing Aldosivi 4 to 1. Also with an irregular rhythm, Gallardo’s men suffered more than necessary.
But it will not be the same to lose for Boca as it is for River. The Xeneize comes from being eliminated directly by the millionaire in the last five presentations in which they were face to face. One more defeat can be decisive for Russo’s cycle, which from the footballing point of view does not arrive at its best.
For River, losing the series will undoubtedly be painful, but it comes with the support of Gallardo and the triumphs that precede it.
As for football, it seems that River is more whole. Gallardo’s nearly seven years at the helm of the squad give millionaires a bonus. They have a clear idea of the game and they carry it forward. Sometimes with ups and downs, as has happened in the last presentations. But there is a solid team, with references, who know what they play.
Boca depends more on individualities. In this 2021 the team lowered its level a lot. The DT seemed to find fresh air with the kids of the club (Varela, Medina and Almendra) in the middle of the field, something that Boca lacked.
But the truth is that it comes from three defeats in a row adding Copa Libertadores and local tournament (Barcelona of Ecuador, Patronato and Santos), and without scoring goals. Precisely, he suffers from the lack of an area forward, something that he will have to solve in the next transfer market.
Rossi will be the starting goalkeeper (Andrada, already back in the country after the positive Covid that kept him in Guayaquil, will be on the bench), while the DT evaluates putting a line of five, with Marcos Rojo as the starter. If so, Cristian Pavón could leave the team. Edwin Cardona, recovered from Covid, is another alternative that DT is considering.
In River, which detected an outbreak of Covid on its campus this Saturday, it is speculated with the presence of Gonzalo Montiel, who in the last game against Aldosivi came out with a contracture. If he does not arrive, his place would be taken by Milton Casco.
Gallardo loses two key players, Matías Suárez and Franco Armani. Before the outbreak of Covid in the Millionaire, the reserve’s substitute goalkeeper, Alan Leonardo Díaz, must play.
The general history indicates that they played 253 times in official matches: Boca won 89 games, River 83 and there were 81 draws.
