The history of Los Pumas as they are known today dates back to June 19, 1965, when on a historic tour of South Africa, the Argentine team beat the Junior Springboks by 11-6. During that match, which was played at the legendary Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg, a journalist from that country mistook the jaguar that wore the national jersey on its shield for a puma.
