As a result of the return to Phase 1 imposed by the Argentine Government, AFA and the Professional League agreed to postpone the semifinals and final of the League Cup that were to be played this weekend in San Juan.
On Thursday night, the president of the country, Alberto Fernández announced the restriction of circulation for 9 days throughout the country and this Friday morning, after a meeting of the sports authorities, it was determined that national football will stop.
This was reported in a statement by the Professional Football League: “The #LigaProfesional de Fútbol de la @afa adheres to the policy of safeguarding public health determined by the national authorities, and decided to suspend and reschedule the semifinal and final matches of the #CopaDeLaLiga.”
For its part, the AFA also issued a text officializing and explaining the decision:
“The Argentine Football Association communicates to the public that in order to accompany the health measures announced by President Alberto Fernández yesterday, aimed at combating the second wave of the Covid 19 pandemic that we are experiencing, it has decided to suspend the Match programming in all local competitions that it organizes from 8:00 p.m. today until Sunday, May 30, 2021 inclusive.
This Association has been working together with the national, provincial and municipal authorities since March 20, 2020 in the development of health protocols aimed at caring for the football family and society in general, respecting each and every one of the decisions taken. by our leaders and by epidemiological experts. That is why, at this time where our beloved country must make an extra effort to control this anguishing pandemic that afflicts us, the AFA and all of us who make up football will once again accompany the national authorities by suspending the programming of matches corresponding to all local competitions for a period of 9 days.
In this sense, we will work together with the governments of the provinces of San Juan, Santiago del Estero and the authorities of the Professional Football League in order to reschedule the semifinals and the grand final of the League Cup in the originally planned scenarios. “.
At the moment, there are no further details on when the matches between Racing and Boca and Colón and Independiente can be played, given that as of June, the Argentine National Team should already have their squad for the Qualifiers and Copa América.
