Jordi Cruyff aims to leave Chinese football to return to Barcelona

BARCELONA – Jordi Cruyff plans to travel to Barcelona in the next few days to meet with Joan Laporta and discuss his possible incorporation to the Barça club, according to different sources revealed to ESPN.

Johan Cruyff’s son is still the coach of Shenzhen FC in the Chinese Super League, but his contract includes a series of clauses that could free him to go to Camp Nou for free as long as he does so as a member of the sports administration.

However, if Barça choose to offer him a different position, Shenzhen would be entitled to claim an amount of money stipulated in their contract.

The one who was a Barcelona player between 1992 and 1996 has held positions of both coach and sports director in various clubs and national teams since he retired in 2010, but Laporta’s idea is for him to work in sports management.

Laporta has signed Mateu Alemany as football director and has decided to give Ramón Planes continuity as technical secretary so that they can draw up a squad that can fight for the Champions League again.

The new president has long with the idea of adding Cruyff to that organization chart and the Dutchman would also be delighted to return to the Camp Nou, both for professional reasons and for some personal circumstances.

In fact, his name was one of the workhorses of the last elections to Barcelona. Víctor Font, another of the candidates for president, publicly announced that he wanted Jordi as sports director together with Xavi Herández as coach but the Dutchman was then surprised by assuring in an interview that his father “would always vote for Laporta”.

Jordi Cruyff arrived at Shenzhen in August 2020 but sources close to the Chinese club acknowledge to ESPN that they have been looking for another coach for several weeks due to the possibility of the Dutchman returning to Barcelona.

In this sense, Shenzhen valued the possibility of giving the opportunity to Jordi’s right-hand man on the bench, Carlos García, but several Chinese media report that Juan Carlos Granero would be the favorite if the Dutch coach finally leaves the team.
