Tottenham Hotspur contacted Mauricio Pochettino to explore the possibility of a dramatic return to the club, as reported by sources to ESPN.
The Argentinian joined Paris Saint-Germain in January and is under contract until 2022.
The French club would be reluctant to approve his departure, hoping to avoid further disruption in the leadership following the firing of Thomas Tuchel on Christmas Eve last year.
However, Pochettino would be interested in returning to Spurs, who fired him in November 2019 after five and a half years at the club to replace him with José Mourinho.
The club’s fortunes continued to decline ever since; Mourinho was fired last month and Spurs only managed to qualify for the first UEFA Europa Conference League after finishing seventh in the Premier League.
Captain Harry Kane also communicated to President Daniel Levy his wish to leave the club this summer.
Pochettino has a close friendship with Kane, and sources informed ESPN that this is a key factor in the Spurs’ decision to explore the possibility of a return to North London.
Pochettino won the French Super Cup and the French Cup with PSG this season, but missed the Ligue 1 title by one point at the hands of Lille. They were eliminated from the Champions League by Manchester City in the semi-finals.
PSG wants him to remain in office next season, and Pochettino may have to resign in order to return to Spurs, if he decides that is what he wants to do.
In one of his few interviews, in December 2019, Levy was asked about the possibility of Pochettino returning to the club someday in the future.
Why not? I have not closed any doors, “he told Evening standard. “Mauricio has done a fantastic job, we are all very grateful. I wish him the best in the future. I am still in contact with him.”
“My relationship with him is very good. It just got to a point where we felt we needed a divorce.”
Mourinho was unable to replicate the same bond that Pochettino had spawned during his cycle at Tottenham, in which he managed to reach the Champions League final in 2019 and break into the top four in the Premier League four times in a row.
The Spurs fell to 14th in the league after winning just three games in mid-November of the 2019-20 season before Levy intervened, but he himself described the decision to fire Pochettino as the most difficult he has ever had to make. take on his career as a manager because “you have to understand that he had developed a personal relationship with Mauricio over the course of five and a half years.”
He added: “It’s not something I wanted to do. Personally, it was incredibly difficult, I told him and he understood.”
Sources also told ESPN what Spurs have approached Pochettino due to lack of other viable options. He is not the only coach they are considering; Ajax’s Erik ten Hag is also in the spotlight despite having renewed until 2023.
Levy told Spurs fans in an open letter last month that he wants to “select someone whose values reflect those of our club and who will bring us back to playing in the style that we have always been recognized in – fluent, attacking and entertaining “.
The Spurs want to organize a meeting in the next two weeks, ideally before the start of the 2020 European Championship.
