Roger Federer (8th) beat Denis Istomin (204th) 6-2, 6-4 and 6-3, for the first round of Roland Garros 2021: It was Her Majesty’s return to Paris after last year’s absence.
Federer played his best tennis match since his return to activity: neither in Doha nor in Geneva were the blows, mobility and efficiency that the Swiss had against Istomin in Paris.
In twenty minutes he closed a first set 6-2. He had to fight a little more in the second and took it to 6-4 although there was one of the gems of the day: Federer threatened to throw a drop, Istomin went forward and ended up in a slice against the bottom strap. The entire Chatrier stood up.
The drops were a constant in the Swiss’s game against an opponent with little mobility (1.88 cm) and who had a hard time reaching Federer’s touch.
In the third set, a few games from the end, Federer threw a Big Willy that went inches. The central court of Roland Garros also applauded him.
Federer advanced to the second round where he will play the winner of Cilic and Rinderknech.
