Before announcing your retirement from Roland Garros, Roger Federer played three games in the great annual event on clay, which had him back on the circuit. The Swiss faced Denis Istomin (204 °) in the first round, with Marin Cilic (47 °) in the second and, in third, with Dominik Koepfer (59 °). A review of what was his performance in Paris.
The Helvetian returned with a huge challenge: maintaining his level at 39 and overcoming the first phase of the Grand Slam on clay. Mission accomplished against Istomin, a 34-year-old tennis player who he beat 6-2, 6-4 and 6-3 without major shocks.
The appointment was with an experienced tennis player: the Croatian Cilic, who although he is no longer going through his best moment, is always a dangerous rival. Again, mission accomplished. This time, in four sets Roger advanced after 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4) and 6-2.
The turn of Koepfer, the 27-year-old German who had never played a five-set match in his career, and who against the Swiss could not achieve it either. In four partial adjusted by 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4) and 7-5, Federer sentenced his pass to the fourth wheel.
The Swiss got rid of Koepfer and will face Berrettini in the round of 16.
Before facing Matteo Berrettini, the Swiss announced his retirement from the competition and, therefore, his performance at Roland Garros 2021 concludes with these three appearances on the track.
