Gaetano Castrovilli, a Fiorentina midfielder, was called up on Thursday by Italy coach Roberto Mancini to replace the injured Lorenzo Pellegrini at the European Championship, pending approval from UEFA.
Pellegrini, a midfielder from Rome, was injured in training this Thursday at the Coverciano technical center and the tests he underwent this Friday morning forced Mancini to resign from his services, reported the Italian Football Federation ( FIGC) in an official note.
The Italian coach, who already had to replace Stefano Sensi with Matteo Pessina last Monday, sent a request to UEFA to replace him with Castrovilli on the eve of the debut in the Eurocup, this Friday against Turkey at the Olympic Stadium in Rome.
The regulations provide that the teams have the right to ask UEFA for the possibility of replacing any injured players until midnight this Thursday, June 10.
Pending UEFA’s response, Castrovilli has been provisionally added to the Azzurro group.
Lorenzo Pellegrini expressed his deep sadness on Thursday for missing the European Championship due to a “damn problem” muscle suffered a few hours before the start of the tournament.
“Unfortunately this damn problem in a thigh will not allow me to play this Eurocup. The bitterness at this moment is a lot”, Pellegrini wrote on his account Instagram, after falling off the list of coach Roberto Mancini on the eve of the opening match against Turkey.
“But at this moment it is necessary to be united and cheer on this fantastic group of men who will give their all in every game until the end. I have faith. Strength, guys. Strength, Italy”, concluded the midfielder.
Italy will debut in the Eurocup this Friday at 9:00 p.m. local time (19:00 GMT) against Turkey at the Roman Olympic Stadium.
Framed in group A, it will be measured next with Switzerland and Wales.
