In 2022, the first FISU Rugby Sevens University World Cup will be held in Kazan, Russia. From August 12-14, 2022, eight men’s and eight women’s teams will compete for the University World Cup crown, following a qualification route that will include 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams from five different regions.
FISU’s association with World Rugby dates back to 2004 when the inaugural World University Rugby Sevens Championship was held in Beijing, China, and is where the discipline became an official FISU sport. Since then, seven has also become an established part of the FISU World University Games, and is now set for a first-ever FISU World Cup.
The first phase has a FISU deadline for the selection of the team in December 2020 and, the one related to South America, will take place as reported by World Rugby in La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The seven made its debut at the FISU World University Games in Kazan 2013 and also participated in Napoli 2019. In both editions of the event, Japan took home top honors. France also achieved podium positions, winning silver in Kazan and bronze in Napoli, while South Africa was runner-up in Napoli and Russia took bronze in Kazan. Argentina participated in Napoli 2019 with a women’s and men’s team.
