The eight times Nadal dropped out of a Grand Slam tournament

After Rafael Nadal (3rd) has announced that he will not play at Wimbledon to “prevent any type of excesses” in his body, we review all the occasions in which the Spanish was withdrawn from a Grand Slam tournament.

The first time that Nadal was not present in a major was in 2006. Already with a Roland Garros title in his record (at the age of 19), the Mallorcan did not play the Australian Open. Rafa had come from overcoming one of his many patellar tendonitis and they had recommended him to use new insoles in his shoes, to avoid a relapse of his injury. The reason for your withdrawal? It could not adapt to the new soles … Although this was not the only time that the first big of the season was not presented: in 2013, due to a stomach virus, he did not play it either.

In 2009, with a Nadal already consolidated as one of the best on the planet, the champion of 20 Grand Slams was not in Wimbledon for another tendinitis in one of his knees. In 2016, due to a left wrist injury, he also missed playing at All England: it had forced him to retire in the third round at Roland Garros. Along with the recent one, these are the three times he did not play in the UK.

Finally, La Fiera did not travel to the US Open on three different occasions: the first one was in 2012, due to another tendonitis in the knee. This absence went hand in hand with the previous loss to the London Olympics, just as it happened in the present. Two years later, in 2014, the same injury prevented him from playing at Flushing Meadows. And finally, in 2020, Nadal did not appear in the United States to play the tournament due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The number three in the world will return to mentalize in playing the last Grand Slam of the season, a tournament he won in 2010, 2013, 2017 and 2019.
