LONDON – Gareth southgateEngland coach acknowledged that it was a frustrating night, after drawing 0-0 with Scotland at Wembley, and that they should have played better.
“It has been a frustrating night. We know we have to play better. We have to give Scotland the credit it deserves because they defended themselves and played very well. We did not do enough to win the game, but at least we did not lose it. We know which is a disappointing result for our fans, but we have to turn the page, “Southgate told ITV.
The England coach replaced a gray Harry Kane with 20 minutes remaining, to introduce Marcus Rashford.
“We needed more runs behind the defense. I thought Rashford would give us that energy. We have to make decisions based on what we see,” he said.
“We all have to reflect, starting with me. We have to do much better. Today we did not deserve to win, we did not have enough opportunities.”
On the youth of the English team, Southgate said that many of his players have not had a night like this “with that intensity and pressure” and that it is a great “lesson for them.”
