Carl nassib, defensive end of the Las Vegas Raiders, confessed this Monday on his social networks his homosexuality, becoming the first player in history in the professional american football league (NFL) in doing it. Nassib, 28, reported this through a video on the social network Instagram, looking for his example to increase the visibility of other homosexual athletes.
“I just wanted to take a moment to say that I am gay. I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, but finally feel comfortable taking it out. I really have the best life, the best family, friends and work that a man can ask for ”, was what Nassib began by saying in the video he shared on his Instagram that has more than 70,000 followers.
The athlete also indicated that he was donating $ 100,000 to Project Trevor, a non-profit association that works to prevent suicide among LGBTQ youth in the United States. “I am quite a reserved person, so I hope you know that I am not doing this to get attention. I just think representation and visibility are very important, ”added the Raiders player.
“In fact, I hope that one day, videos like this and the whole process of coming out of the closet will not be necessary, but until then I will do my best and my part to cultivate a culture of acceptance and compassion,” Nassib closed. This is the first case in which an active NFL player has come out openly gay. Several players have declared their homosexuality after retiring from the American Football League, the highest-rated sport in the United States.
“Proud of you”
For their part, the Raiders praised Nassib in a post on Twitter. “Proud of you, Carl, ”the team wrote in a post accompanying Nassib’s Instagram statement. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell greeted Nassib and said he hoped similar announcements in the future would no longer be newsworthy. “The NFL family is proud of Carl for courageously sharing his truth today,” Goodell said, as reported by AFP.
