The European Champions Cup will once again have 24 clubs with eight representatives from the Premiership, PRO14 and TOP 14 that their places were secured. For the purposes of the draw that will take place along the same lines as last season, the clubs will be ranked first in four levels according to their classification, before being drawn in two groups of 12: Group A and Group B. It should be clarified that the same league at the same level will not be included in the same group.
The clubs ranked number 1 and number 2 of each league will be in Level 1, clubs ranked number 3 and number 4 will be on Level 2, clubs ranked number 5 and 6 will be on Level 3, and the number 7 and the number 8 classified clubs will belong to the Level 4.
Level 1 and Level 4 clubs that have been drawn in the same group, but are not in the same league, will play each other at home and away during the group stage, as will Level 2 and Level 3 clubs. that have been drawn in the same group, but are not in the same league.
Once the draw is complete, clubs will meet their opponents in the group stage and the EPCR will begin work on the match schedule with an announcement of exact dates, venues, kick-off times and television coverage as soon as possible. .
The 2021/22 tournament will be played over nine weekends with four rounds of group stage matches starting in December, when Stade Toulousain begins its title defense. The eight highest-ranked clubs in each group will qualify for the knockout phase, which will consist of a 16-team round with home and away matches, quarter-finals and semi-finals, with the final in Marseille on May 28, 2022.
