The basketball team of Puerto Rico closed its participation in the Olympic playoffs in Belgrade (which airs on ESPN +), with a loss to the host, Serbia, by a score of 102-84.
With the reverse, his second in line after losing on the opening day 90-83 against Italy, Puerto Ricans say goodbye to the possibility of qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics.
Vasilije Micic, current EuroLeague MVP, scored 21 points and gave eight assists.
In a losing effort, Isaiah Piñeiro scored 23 points, while center George Conditt contributed 20.
Puerto Rico coach Eddie Casiano expressed frustration after the game over the inconsistency of the whistle in Belgrade, Serbia.
“You feel helpless,” Casiano said at a press conference. “They didn’t give us the benefit of the doubt. They only gave it to one team. We made a lot of adjustments, but we have to get used to this,” he added, praising the 20-year-old Conditt’s encounter.
“I have been behind that boy for almost five years. He is a prototype of an NBA player. He will continue to improve. I am very proud of the way he accepted the challenge. That says we have for the future,” he said.
Puerto Rico has not participated in men’s basketball at an Olympiad since Athens 2004.
In other results, Italy dispatched 79-59 to Dominican Republic in the other semifinal, eliminating them from the event, and Mexico succumbed 102-74 against Brazil, the only Latin team alive in the tournament that takes place in four different venues.
Early in the morning, Venezuela fell and also said goodbye to Tokyo before the Slovenia scored by Luka Doncic.
