BARCELONA – Barcelona announced this Wednesday the official transfer of Junior Firpo to Leeds United, closed for 15 million euros and the Barça club reserving a 20 percent percentage of a future sale by Leeds of the Dominican side, who traveled the last weekend and was already presented by Marcelo Bielsa’s team after passing the medical examination, signing a contract for four seasons.
The departure of the side of Dominican origin, who signed for Barça in the summer of 2019 from Real Betis, will leave a profit of about 2 million euros in the coffers of the Barça club, considering that 3 of the 15 million entered will be for the Verdiblanco club and another 10 had yet to be amortized. Beyond that, Barcelona will save a gross salary close to 6 million euros, in one more step towards that reduction in which the Barça leadership is working so hard.
Firpo joins the departures of Jean Claire Todibo, sold for 8.5 million euros and representing a salary savings of 3; Trincao, whose transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers will save him a gross salary close to 6 million; Konrad, who will leave a profit on sale of 3 million and a salary savings of 0.5 million, and Matheus Fernandes, whose contract termination is suspected will end in court.
Signed as an alternative to Jordi Alba a year after Lucas Digne left the Camp Nou for Everton, Junior Firpo never established himself at Barcelona, with whom he played 41 games in two seasons, 22 of them as a starter and adding 2,000 264 minutes that show the little importance that he had both with Ernesto Valverde and with Quique Setién and Ronald Koeman. In fact, even Sergiño Dest, theorist right back, passed in front of him on some occasion when Jordi Alba, indisputable in the position, was out of the team, which caused the Dominican to attend to a possible march that did not materialize.
ALBA, WITHOUT COMPETITION
The transfer of Firpo, added to the signing of Juan Miranda by Betis after the transfer to the Andalusian club itself, leaves the Barça squad again with only Jordi Alba as a fixed left-back and although it could be speculated with the interest of the Barça club in trying the signing of another player (there has been talk of Gayá and Marcos Alonso among others), the delicate financial situation of the entity makes it unlikely, unless it was through player exchanges, the arrival of another player.
At the moment Alejandro Balde, 18-year-old left-back for Barça B, on whom the club has high hopes, aims to do the preseason with the first team and it is not ruled out that based on his performance in the eyes of Ronald Koeman, he could become the alternative to Jordi Alba, who, for the moment, is again without competition.
