US commotion: NFL star arrested for domestic violence

Richard Sherman, one of the main stars of the NFL, was arrested this Wednesday morning after being accused of “Assault for domestic violence”; as reported by the police authorities of the county of King, in the state of Washington (United States). The athlete who played in the last three seasons in the San Francisco 49ers, is under arrest and denied the option of posting bail.

The 33-year-old cornerback, who is currently a free agent, is charged with assault for domestic violence, a charge that often occurs when an individual refuses to leave a property during a domestic altercation. Sherman is considered one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL and helped the Seattle Seahawks win the Super Bowl in 2014. Although it seems like a minor charge, the athlete could face a stiff penalty from the NFL.

NFLPA statement

The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) later issued a statement regarding Sherman’s arrest without naming him directly. “We were informed of the arrest last night of one of our leading players for an alleged incident of domestic violence and we have activated our crisis protocol for domestic violence for the protection and support of all those involved”; the union said in an official statement.

In addition, as reported by AFP, the statement added that the NFLPA will continue to “closely monitor events as more data is provided to us.” According to various media, the athlete refused to be questioned by the officials and later had a confrontation with them until he was arrested. The NFL is already investigating the case and if a violation of the conduct policy is found, Sherman will receive the appropriate sanction.

The wife defends him

According to ESPN journalist Adam Schefter, Sherman’s wife came out to defend him. Ashley Moss told The Seattle Times: ‘He didn’t hurt anyone. My children were not injured in the incident. He is a good person and this is not his character. We’re doing fine, we’re just trying to get it out. I want people to know that no one was hurt, “” said journalist Schefter on his Twitter account.
