This Thursday marks the 70th anniversary of a very special date in the history of the Formula 1. On July 15, 1951, the Argentine José Froilán González achieved the first victory in the history of the Escudería Ferrari in the circuit of Silverstone, where this weekend the Grand Prix of Great Britain. The team will pay a more than special tribute.
In the social networks of the Italian team, it was announced that this weekend there will be a tribute to that date so remembered by all. Charles Leclerc, current Ferrari driver, will drive the legendary car with which Froilán González won that day. Some years ago, Fernando Alonso He did the same when he competed for the team.
The 1951 British GP was the first in which Ferrari achieved pole position and victory. All at the hands of Froilán, who entered the great history of Formula 1 and especially the team. González defeated the all powerful Alfa Romeo and above all he managed to beat Juan Manuel Fangio, which a few years later achieved five titles in Formula 1.
González posted an average of 161,861 Formula 1 kilometers and a fastest lap of 1m43s4. Also, he managed to beat Giuseppe Farina, who had been champion with Alfa Romeo in the inaugural Formula 1 season, a year earlier. Froilán won the race with an advantage of almost a minute over Juan Manuel Fangio, who was second. He also took two laps of Luigi villoresi, who finished third.
José Froilán González’s victory was the first of 238 for the team throughout 71 years of Formula 1 history. A year later and at the hands of Alberto ascari, the historic red team won the first World Drivers’ title, of the 15 they won in the following years of history.
