River Plate vs. Argentinos Juniors - Match Report - July 14, 2021

(EFE) – River Plate and Argentinos Juniors equaled 1-1 in the only Argentine duel of the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores de América and left the series open for next week’s rematch.

Matías Suárez opened the account for the local in the 10th minute of play, but Gabriel Hauche established the final equality in the score in the 40th minute in a match played at the Antonio Vespucio Liberti stadium.

River Plate came out determined to establish the difference, but Argentinos surprised with an offensive approach with Gabriel Ávalos as a reference in the area.

The local, led by Marcelo Gallardo, took time to assimilate this position of the rival and after 10 minutes he reached the advantage with a combination of the debutant Braian Romero who after a diagonal gave a low center for the entry of Matías Suárez to touch the net.

Three minutes later, Paulo Díaz headed a corner kick that demanded the reaction of Lucas Chaves and four minutes later Julián Álvarez left Suárez in front of Chaves again but when trying to avoid him the goalkeeper managed to hand the ball.

River sustained the offensive action and in the 35th minute he had a very clear new opportunity with a combination of speed that ended with Suárez again hand in hand with Chaves and again the goalkeeper won the duel.

These missed opportunities hurt even more for River in the 40th minute because Argentinos reached the equalizer with a center headed by Jonathan Sandoval and then pushed into the net, also headed by Gabriel Hauche in the small area.

After a few minutes of the complement, Gallardo bet on a rotation with three changes and the income of Enzo Fernández, Carrascal and Angileri – a little later also Girotti- but Argentinos solidified in defense and blocked any attempt by the ‘Millionaire’.

A shot by Girotti from the edge of the area and an appearance by Colombian Carrascal who could not finish due to the appearance of defender Miguel Torrén were the only options to modify a score that ended in a draw.

The rematch will be next Wednesday, July 21 at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium, where the winner of the series that will cross in the quarterfinals with the winner of the crossing between Boca Juniors and Atlético Mineiro from Brazil will be defined.
