2021, the year with the most Argentine debutants in ATP finals

Thanks to the resounding victory and subsequent qualification to the final in Bastad, Federico Coria from Santa Fe will be the fourth Argentine tennis player to debut in a decisive ATP instance in 2021, a record that had never been registered in the 21st century.

Guillermo’s younger brother, 29 years old and number 77 of the circuit, joins the list made up of the Cerúndolo brothers from Buenos Aires, Juan Manuel, 19, who beat Spanish Albert Ramos Viñolas in Córdoba, and Francisco, 22, who fell to his compatriot Diego Schwartzman in Buenos Aires, and the Rosario Facundo Bagnis, 31, who succumbed in front of the local Cristian Garín in Santiago de Chile.

Until the current season, the best calendar year for the Albiceleste representatives had been in 2001, when three were released in the final round: Guillermo Coria celebrated in Viña del Mar against Gastón Gaudio, and José Acasuso and David Nalbandian lost in Buenos Aires, against Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten, and in Palermo, against Spaniard Félix Mantilla, respectively.

The little encouraging data for Fefo, who will face the Norwegian Casper Ruud this Sunday, is that only six of the 18 debutants in the current century shouted champion: Juan Ignacio Chela (2000), his brother Guillermo (2001), Juan Martín Del Potro (2008), Schwartzman (2016), Juan Lóndero (2019) and Juan Manuel Cerúndolo (2021).
