Luca Percassi, Atalanta’s CEO, acknowledged on Tuesday that many clubs expressed interest in signing Argentine defender Cristian Romero, recent Copa América champion, but stressed that he will only leave the club if an offer “adequate” to the value of the player arrives.
“The principle that we have followed in these years is that sales should strengthen us, and not make us weaker. It is obvious that Cristian had an extraordinary season, he was awarded as the best defense in Serie A. It is normal that there is interest,” he said Percassi at a press conference organized to present the new kit for the 2021-2022 season.
“In Atalanta Romero he found a place that allowed him to grow and play the Champions League and the Copa América as a starter. The offer must be appropriate to the value of the player,” he added.
Romero, 23, was signed on loan from Atalanta last year from Juventus Turin and was the protagonist of high-level benefits, making a decisive contribution to the third position of the Bergamo club.
Atalanta recently exercised its definitive purchase option for an amount close to twenty million.
Its market value is 35 million euros, according to the specialized portal “Transfermarkt”, although it is estimated that Atalanta will not let it out for less than sixty million.
In the last campaign, Romero played 42 games for Gian Piero Gasperini’s team, scoring three goals.
