The Ecuadorian weightlifter Neisi Dajomes won gold at the Tokyo Olympics and gave his country the fourth medal in its history, in addition to confirming the best Olympic performance in Ecuador.
The name of Dajomes joins those of Jefferson Pérez and Richard Carapaz, the previous Olympic champions who raised the tricolor flag to the top of the podium. Neisi is the first woman to do so.
Ecuador has three gold and one silver medals since Paris 1924, the first participation in history. Had to wait until Atlanta 1996 to get the first medal.
It was Jefferson Perez who made it. The Cuenca-born athlete won in a 20-kilometer march and put Ecuador on the list of nations to win an Olympic gold.
In Beijing 2008, Jefferson finished in second place and won the silver medal, second in the country.
The remaining two were won at these 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Richard Carapaz triumphed in road cycling and Neisi Dajomes prevailed in the 76 kilogram division by achieving a total of 263 kilograms, after lifting 118 in snatch and 145 in clean and jerk.
