Marileidy Paulino goes for the Olympic medal of the 400 meters in Tokyo 2020

The Dominican runner finished as the fastest in her group, crushing her personal best and the Dominican record in the discipline

Dominican Republic will have one last athlete competing for Olympic gold. The dominican Marileidy paulino qualified for the final of the Women’s 400 meter sprint with a spectacular career in which he pulverized his personal best and the Dominican national record.

With a time of 49.38 seconds, Marileidy paulino made sure to finish first in her group, comfortably beating what was her best time in the 400 flat meters (and the Dominican record), 49.99 seconds. Only one of the runners who qualified for the final was able to set a better time than the Dominican sprinter, Stephanie McPherson of Jamaica (49.34), one of the favorites to achieve an Olympic medal.

Paulino scored a qualifying time even better than that of the reigning gold medalist of the Women’s 400 meter sprint, Shaunae Miller-Uibo (49.60) of Bahamas, who finished with the fourth fastest time among the runners classified to the final. It will be the first time that a Dominican athlete competes for the possibility of Olympic gold in this discipline.

In addition to Paulino, McPherson Y Miller-Uibo, the others classified in the category were Candice McLeod (Jamaica – 49.51), Roxana Gomez (Cuba – 49.71), Quanera Hayes (United States – 49.81), Allyson felix (United States – 49.89) and Jodie williams (Great Britain – 49.97). By nationalities it is easy to determine that seven of the runners who will be in the final they are from the american continent and one is European.

The competition method to determine the runners who reached the final was to divide the sprinters who reached the semifinals into three groups, where the two that finished with the first two places crossed directly and the final places were occupied by the best two best overall times after race winners.

The final competition of the women’s 400 meter dash where she will be running Paulino will be disputed next Friday, August 6 at 8:35 AM (Dominican time).
