The Lionesses go for the gold in Tokyo! They gave it back 2-1 to India and will meet the Netherlands in the Olympic final

Las Leonas defeated India 2-1 in the hockey semifinals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The Indian team surprised with an early goal, but Las Leonas tied it on insistence and won it with a drag double by Noel Barrionuevo.

After beating Germany in the quarterfinals, the Argentine women’s team started their search for the Olympic final with the left foot. The national group was the victim of the initial deconcentration and India was able to make use of its most powerful weapon. Just 1 minute and a half from the start of the match, the short came: dragged and Gurjit’s goal.

Las Leonas’ reaction was quick and Julieta Jankunas went out looking for the area with Delfina Merino on two occasions, although without success. Seconds later Vicky Granatto overflowed looking for the short and did not get it. On the left, Agustina Albertarrio did what she did best in this tournament: overflow in search of the center or controlled entry into the area to find the fault. He tried to drive the ball into the semicircle with a powerful punch, but neither club found that deflection. Majo Granatto loaded the ball in and, with an aerial gesture, collided with the India brand. Argentina kept insisting and finally Rochi Sánchez Moccia achieved the first short corner for Argentina. Gorzelani aimed her drag, but the shot was blocked by the rival’s first exit.

At the end of the first quarter, Gorze had to leave due to a cut on his head and that is why he missed the second Argentine short. Already in the second quarter, Noel Barrionuevo took over the shot and the well-deserved draw for Argentina arrived. The historic and experienced Las Leonas dragger took control of the stopped ball and made it 1-1.

After the equality, India got a new penalty corner, which Belén Succi was able to stop. Although the goalkeeper dominated the situation, Barrionuevo’s clearance hit Raposo and the failure was repeated. After a poor execution, the referee called a foul inside the area on the grounds that Poy Toccalino had not removed his mask in time. However, the video review determined that the action was part of a dynamic play and that Argentina should not be penalized. Nearing the end of the first half came a new short for Las Leonas, which Gorzelany could not capitalize on.

The third quarter arrived and Chapa Retegui’s team did not lower their intensity: they pressed, recovered and insisted. After a tireless search to penetrate the rival area and not take the prize, 5 minutes later Jankunas threw a hunt, which bounced off Granatto and ended up generating a short corner.

As had happened in the tie, Noel Barrionuevo executed the drag and came Argentina’s second goal. India requested the video review because it considered that the ball had been dangerous, however, there were no arguments to change the initial decision and the goal was validated.
