Bernardo Uriel Barrondo is the only Guatemalan to complete the 50km Tokyo 2020 march

In his first Olympic Games, the native of San Cristóbal Verapaz managed to cross the goal of the 50-kilometer march

TOKYO, JAPAN – Tremendous debut for the Guatemalan Bernardo Uriel Barrondo in the Olympic Games. The native of San Cristóbal Verapaz was the only one in the country who was able to finish the demanding 50-kilometer march of Tokyo 2020.

Uriel concluded in position 34 of the test disputed in Sapporo Odori Park with a time of 4 hours, 8 minutes and 34 seconds, to 18:26 of the winner of the competition. His brother Erick, London 2012 silver medalist, was disqualified and Luis Angel Sanchez, the other Guatemalan at the event, dropped out.

Uriel Barrondo stayed in the chasing pack for the first 30 kilometers, but the high temperatures and humidity began to take their toll after that. The Guatemalan began to fail in technique and received three reprimands, which penalized him with stopping for five minutes.

Despite that unfortunate episode, Barrondo did not allow himself to be defeated and continued with his head held high on the circuit. In the last kilometers he managed to climb positions until he crossed the finish line in position 34.

The winner of the 50-kilometer march in Tokyo 2020 was the Polish Dawid Tomala, who did a time of 3:50:08. The silver medal went to the German Jonathan Hilbert (3:50:44) and the third place was occupied by the Canadian Evan Dunfee (3:50:59).
