The previous meeting between the two countries culminated with South Korea taking the better part, after the team scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to knock out Dominican Republic by score of four runs against three. The Dominican team dominated most of that encounter, despite only connecting six hits, compared to the twelve that the Koreans ended up shooting.

Selection of Dominican Republic has confirmed that Raul Valdes will again be the pitcher who will face South Korea. In his previous appearance against that team, the nationalized Dominican (originally from Cuba), who has a 1.69 ERA, worked for 5.1 innings in which he allowed seven hits and allowed an earned run, while striking out. five batters and walked three. He made a total of 111 pitches of which 69 ended up being strikes.

A victory of the Dominican Republic would mean his first Olympic medal in baseball, while South Korea goes in search of his third medal.
