Mexican delegation Tokyo 2020 balance sheet

We make a final balance of the Olympic Games and classify Mexican athletes in gold, silver and bronze according to their performance

Finished the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and Mexico he collected four medals to finish 84th on the Olympic medal table. With this number of medals, all bronze, the Mexican delegation had its lowest harvest since Atlanta 96, when it got just one metal.

In spite of everything, these games will also be remembered for historical performances since, although some athletes did not get a medal, they competed at the first level in disciplines in which Mexico had not appeared at the world level.

We do the evaluation of our Mexican representatives. Although they have all the credit for reaching the Olympic tournament in complicated situations such as the pandemic or the lack of support, there are disciplines that did remain due due to their strength.

Gold medals

Synchronized women’s dives of the 10m platform, men’s soccer, archery in mixed teams and women’s weightlifting were the fourth disciplines in which the medals were obtained for this edition of the games.

Alejandra Orozco and Gabriela Agúndez, the 22 elements of the U-24 team, Alejandra Valencia and Luis Álvarez, as well as Areli Fuentes were the athletes who left the name of Mexico high and that is why they are in this category.

Similarly, Alexa Moreno’s fourth place in artistic gymnastics in the jump of the colt was historic, since Mexico has never appeared in this discipline and there was even controversy over the score to the Mexican, who added 14,716 units for 14,733 points of South Korean Seojong Yeo, who came in third place.

Jorge Orozco also takes this recognition after fourth place in Tire in the pit final. Likewise, the selection of softball and its fourth place in the discipline was historic, as Mexico had never brought a team in this sport to the summer tournament.

Silver Medals

Yahel Castillo and Juan Celaya, as well as Diego Balleza and Kevin Berlin, came in fourth on the synchronized 3m springboard and synchronized 10m platform, respectively. Although they had a good place and fought for the medals, the Diving is one of the disciplines in which better results were expected because Mexico is a power in this area.

In the women’s branch, Carolina Mendoza and Dolores Hernández were also fourth in the synchronized dives from the 3m springboard. The controversy occurred with the statements of Paola Espinosa, also a diver, who assured that she could do a better role than her colleagues.

Gabriela Agúndez had a good participation in the individual 10m platform and also closed in fourth place in a good presentation at the Olympic Games. In addition, Agúndez obtained a previous medal with Ale Orozco in synchronized from the same platform.

Tonatiu López also had a prominent role in the 800 meters. The sprinter slipped to the semifinal and, by a matter of hundredths, could not access the final of the specialty.

Paola Morán also reached the semifinals in Athletics in the 400 meter dash. The sprinter qualified for this instance after a good tie, but she no longer reached the mark to enter among the best.

Also in Athletics, the marcher Alegna González won a fifth place in the 20 kilometers for women; he was less than a minute from sneaking into the medals. The Mexican was with a mark of 1:30:33, by 1:29:57 of the Chinese Hong Liu, who conquered third place.

Dafne Navarro from Gimnasia en Trampolín gave a dream performance as she entered the final of the specialty. The Mexican entered the fight for medals in eighth place and with great confidence made her final round, which led to a fall that penalized her score, despite everything, her routine and performance were also historic.

Bronze medal

The rest of disciplines and competitors fall into this category. Although qualifying for the Olympic Games is a challenge and an achievement, there were disciplines that were left behind. Diving was expected with more medals, Archery or Baseball. In the case of the Mexican ninth, they disappointed by not being able to fight even for the bronze medal. Taekwondo and Box also fell short in their aspirations, since they were disciplines that normally add medals.
