Dennis Schroder agrees to one year and $ 5.9 million with Celtics

Free agent point guard Dennis Schroder will play for the Boston Celtics, he announced Tuesday on his Instagram account.

The deal is for one year and will be for $ 5.9 million, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Schroder, 27, turned down the maximum extension the Los Angeles Lakers offered the point guard during the regular season, worth more than $ 80 million, to seek a more lucrative deal over the summer.

Since that time, the Lakers had explored trade options involving Schroder after seeing their replay for the championship fall short after the Phoenix Suns eliminated them in the first round.

Schroder averaged a disappointing 14.3 points on 40 percent shooting (30.8 percent of 3) and 2.8 assists in the series as he returned to the Lakers lineup with just two games remaining in the regular season after suffering from COVID- 19 and being out for two weeks in the final stretch of the season.

Lakers vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka made it clear that Los Angeles had an interest in keeping Schroder close, however imperfect his fit may have been in his first year with the franchise.

“There are many different things that we will have to evaluate there, but Dennis is an attractive player for us just because of what he brings,” Pelinka said in early June.

ESPN’s Dave McMenamin contributed to this report.
