River Plate has only one path left to Libertadores 2022: the League Tournament

The CONMEBOL Libertadores for River Plate is over and it must focus on qualifying for the next one and it only has one path left: the League Tournament.

“Now we have to focus on the local tournament to be able to have the chance to fight it until the end”, Marcelo Gallardo accepted at the post-match press conference in Brazil.

River was clearly outmatched and eliminated by Atlético Mineiro in the quarterfinals and qualification as champion is no longer an option. And it was Boca Juniors, with its victory on penalties in the Argentine Cup that left him with no other alternative.

So, the entry to the 2022 Cup, in which the Millionaire has not been missing since 2015, is in the local championship, just one of Gallardo’s few debts. In any case, you do not need to win it, but to get among the three best of the season (in an annual table, which also adds the last League Cup).

Currently, River is three points behind the last qualifying position, held by Vélez. Ahead are Independiente and Estudiantes, also with 34 units such as Fortín and Colón leads with 38, but which already has its place in the next Libertadores, as the current Argentine champion. Below, from position 3 or 4 (if Colón is still inside), the next four will enter the South American, in which Banfield and Boca are already.

There are 19 dates ahead, in a somewhat tight calendar for the South American Qualifiers and the legislative elections in the country. For a team like Gallardo’s used to fighting more than one front simultaneously until the end, a single competition seems little. But adding one of the missing glasses to the Doll cycle and the international ticket should be sufficient incentive.
