Diego Schwartzman will face Casper Ruud in direct crossing of the knockout stages of the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, tournament that is part of the cement tour prior to the US Open.
The “Peque”, ranked 14th in the ATP world rankings, was installed in the round of 16 after having left British Daniel Evans (28th) and American Frances Tiafoe (51st) on the road, and not before 15.30 he will face the Norwegian (11th), one of the best tennis players of the season.
The 29-year-old Argentine has a favorable track record over Ruud, whom he beat four times, in Australia, Rio de Janeiro and Hamburg in 2018, plus last year at the Cincinnati edition which was played in New York because of the coronavirus pandemic, while it lost once, this year in Monte-Carlo.
Schwartzman won the Argentina Open this year, the fourth title of his career, while Ruud, also champion in Buenos Aires, in 2019, won the Geneva, Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel tournaments.
In the case of advancing to the quarterfinals, Schwartzman will meet the winner of the crossing that will be cheered by Guido Pella (93rd) from Bahia and Alexander Zverev (5th) from Germany.
