Barty-Kerber, an anticipated final in Cincinnati

No.1 seed Ashleigh Barty reached her sixth semi-final of the year, and second in the Cincinnati tennis tournament, a WTA Masters 1000, by defeating the Czech Barbora Krejcikova, ninth favorite, in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-4.

The duel between the two Grand Slam champions, the second so far in 2021, lasted just one hour and 11 minutes and Barty will be in the semifinals of the tournament for the second year in a row.

The Wimbledon champion extended her season record to 38-7 with the win, in which he rallied from 2-4 down in the second set. It is Barty’s second win in as many encounters with Roland Garros champion Krejcikova, who also defeated the Czech 7-5, 6-3 in the fourth round at Wimbledon.

The Australian tennis player will have a chance to maintain the winning streak when she meets Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals. The German was favored by the abandonment of the Czech Petra Kvitova when she was 6-4 and 3-3.

The clash with Kerber will be a repeat of Wimbledon for Barty, who defeated the German in the semifinals of the 2019 Cincinnati tournament.
