Manchester City suspend Benjamin Mendy, accused of rape and sexual assault

LONDON – Manchester City announced on Thursday the suspension of French international Benjamin Mendy, pending a police investigation after he was formally charged with four counts of rape and one of sexual assault.

The 27-year-old left-back remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear this Friday before the Chester Magistrates Court (north-west England).

The charges against Mendy are based on the complaints of three people over 16 years of age in relation to events that allegedly occurred between October 2020 and August 2021, according to police sources in a statement released this Thursday.

The police recalled that the accused “has the right to a fair trial” and stressed that it is “extremely important” that information or comments are not shared online that could compromise the ongoing judicial case.

For its part, Manchester City underlined in its statement that “the matter is subject to a legal process and, therefore, the Club cannot comment further until that process is complete.”
