Since the beginning of the year, Saul set the goal of being the unified champion of 168 pounds and for that he first had to perform the mandatory fight of the CMB in February before Avni Yildirim, whom he dominated and defeated in three rounds.
After that he challenged Billy joe saunders, who was the monarch on the part of the OMB
. The man from Guadalajara managed to land a right uppercut in the eighth round that caused a fracture to his left cheekbone and he could no longer leave for the ninth inning.
Immediately after that victory, Canelo Alvarez he sent a message to Caleb Plant to carry out the contest, but some commitments from the Mexican delayed the negotiations.
However, they began talks for the unification to take place on September 18, but they did not agree on the terms and the Mexican sought to confront Dmitry Bivol, champion of the OMB at 175 lbs.
