Gastón Gaudio chose the five players who will represent Argentina in the Davis Cup series against Belarus on September 18 and 19: Diego Schwartzman, Guido Pella, Horacio Zeballos, Máximo González and, for the first time in his career, Federico Coria.
The series will be played at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club, a week after the end of the US Open, for the reclassification playoffs for World Group I. Argentina seeks to return to the world stage, from which it left in March 2020 by losing against Colombia. In 2019, Argentina reached the Davis Cup quarter-finals, when they lost to Spain.
Federico Coria appears as the main novelty in the team led by Gaudio. The man born in Rosario 29 years ago had never before been part of an Argentine Davis Cup team.
On the Belarus side, his first singlist is Ilya Ivashka, with an outstanding season: he won his first ATP title in Winston-Salem, beat Zverev in Munich and snatched a set from Nadal in brick dust (Conde de Godó). It is currently the 53rd in the world. Egor Gerasimov (28 years old; 82nd) is the second singlist.
Against Belarus it could be the last series of Gastón Gaudio as captain of the Argentine team, which he arrived in 2019.
