Abigail Montes ready for Claressa Shields PFL challenge: "she's the best in boxing, but this is MMA"

The second fight of the two-time Olympic boxing champion Claressa Shields was made official in PFL MMA, facing the Mexican Abigail Montes on October 27 in the final event of the 2021 season in Hollywood, Florida.

Shields, who is also the undisputed champion in two professional boxing divisions, debuted against Brittney Elkin in the PFL last June with a third-round TKO and continues to train in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the Jackson-Winkeljohn Gym. , alongside former 135-pound champion Holly Holm.

“She is the best in boxing, but this is MMA. She is going to exploit her experience in the hands, but I will also do it with my wrestling and my jiujitsu, without neglecting my hands. We know that at Lobo Gym we are characterized by good boxing, and I have tried very hard hands like those of Alexa Grasso and Irene Aldana. I think that on that side it will not surprise me. We have many holes that we can take advantage of, ”Montes told ESPN Deportes.

‘Abby’, who is 21 years old and has a record of 2-0, will be the first Mexican woman to step on the PFL cage. Her two triumphs came in Combate Americas against Claudia Zamora and the American promoter Ikon on April 6 of this year, where she beat Teresita de Jesús in the first round.

Although he is just beginning to build his name in professional MMA, Montes has been training since he was 15 years old with Irene Aldana, who is in fourth place in the UFC bantamweight ranking and Alexa Grasso, who entered the top 10 of the flyweight with her victory. against Mayce Barber, as well as Invicta FC 125-pound champion and former Bellator title contender Alejandra Lara.

His camp has already started with part of the work in Puebla, with his teammates Alessandro Costa and Diego Lopes, champions of the local promoter Lux Fight League, where they will also refine the floor game, knowing that it is one of the weaknesses that the proclaimed GWOAT still has. in boxing history.

“We are already working on the strategy, I will follow the instructions of my coach Francisco Grasso, who is the expert. I am going to go up in the division, it is the first time that I am not going to worry about the weight and I will focus only on the fight, on arriving as strong as possible and being the best version of myself, “he added.

The Jalisco knows that the media attention will be on the side of the American and that she will be the favorite in the bets, but she does not find pressure in it.

“From day one I train with the best in the world. Maybe I don’t have that much experience inside the cage, but I have the maturity to face these kinds of challenges. It motivates me to train with people who represent Mexico worldwide, “he said.

In addition to the fight between Shields and Montes, PFL will contest the belts of its seven categories in the event on October 27.
