Nicolás Gaitán arrived in Uruguay: "I prioritized sports and that's why I closed with Peñarol"

Nicolás Gaitán arrived in Uruguay this Friday to join Club Atlético Peñarol. At a press conference, the Argentine ex-Boca footballer said that he decided to prioritize sports over other possibilities that were better from an economic point of view, and appreciated being able to meet again with Mono Maximiliano Pereira, a former teammate at Benfica.

Last Sunday, August 29, the coal club made official the arrival of the 33-year-old player, whose last team was SC Braga de Portugal and who signed a contract with Peñarol that ends in June 2022.

Gaitán commented this Friday: “Uruguay is a new country, but very similar to Argentina, where soccer is also experienced with great passion, being the main sport.”

Regarding his new team, the Argentine said: “Peñarol is a very big club with a lot of history. I know the club and I was also watching some games for Maxi (Pereira); now I have to get well during this quarantine, and then meet my teammates in training. “

The Argentine coincided with the Uruguayan full-back, currently a black and white soccer player, for five seasons at Benfica, where they generated a great friendship.

Gaitán pointed out that ‘the sports situation and friendship with Maxi’ were his two main reasons for arriving at Peñarol: “Maxi insisted a lot on me to come. And taking into account the offers that I had, they weren’t as important in terms of sport as Peñarol, they were much better economically, but at this stage I prioritized sports and that’s why I closed with Peñarol ”.

“Friendship with Maxi will always remain, I lived with him for five years in Portugal, I know his family and they are spectacular people,” Gaitán remarked.

The Argentine said that in terms of physicality he has been training constantly, but indicated that obviously it is not the same to work with a private physical trainer than to do it within a professional team: “Individual training is controlled, but in football there is no control of movements ”, he valued.

The left-handed footballer trained in Boca has played mainly as a winger, playing in recent seasons also as an attacking midfielder. Gaitán commented that he will play where coach Mauricio Larriera needs him, highlighting that he will be at your command in the position where he can contribute the most to the team.

Finally, he said about Uruguayan football: “It is similar to the Argentine one, it is very fierce, so it will be highly contested. Maybe there is not that much difference between the teams, so I think every game will be a war. “

Gaitán must comply with the corresponding quarantine when arriving from Europe, and for ten days he will work in a farm owned by Maxi Pereira, duly equipped to be able to work physically at a high level.

Then, the player will join the training sessions at Los Aromos, hoping to quickly meet his new teammates so that, mainly, he will be able to be at order in the semifinal against Athletico Paranaense for the CONMEBOL South American Cup, whose first match will be played in the Campeón del Siglo on Thursday, September 23, and the rematch will take place in Brazil on Thursday 30.
