Just turned 19, the young Canadian Leylah Fernández can say that this US Open is the tournament of his life. Because he arrived in silence and is, at a minimum, in the semifinals of the tournament.
In one of the best matches of the tournament and with moments of supreme authority she beat Elina Svitolina 6-3, 3-6 and 7-6 (5) in just under two and a half hours of play.
Intensity, points and alternations on the scoreboard encouraged an audience that favored the Canadian at key moments of the match, which was also a new failed attempt by Svitolina in her fight to get that blessed first Grand Slam.
Now Fernández will have to wait to meet his next rival: Aryna Sabalenka, second seeded, against Czech Barbora Krejcikova, Eighth favorite, champion this year at the French Open.
