49ers vs. Lions - Game Report - September 12, 2021

DETROIT – DETROIT (AP) – Dre Greenlaw returned an interception for a touchdown to help the 49ers score 17 points in just over two minutes in the first half as San Francisco held on to a 41-33 victory over the Los Angeles. Detroit Lions.
San Francisco led 38-10 early in the fourth quarter and allowed Detroit to score 23 points in a span of just over three minutes to get within eight. But the Lions lost possession on downs at the opponent’s 24-yard line with 12 seconds left after recovering a fumble from Deebo Samuel.
For much of the evening, the 49ers were more like the team that went to the Super Bowl two years ago than the team that suffered 10 losses last season, when injuries took a heavy toll.
The Lions, meanwhile, were on their way to giving coach Dan Campbell a miserable debut in charge, until the comeback gave them some hope.
San Francisco had Jimmy Garoppolo and George Kittle back on offense and Nick Bosa on defense after all three missed much of the previous season with injuries.
Garoppolo, who helped San Francisco get to the Super Bowl, is 23-8 as a regular-season starter since arriving in a trade from New England. Kittle finished with four receptions for 78 yards. Bosa finished with four tackles, including a sack early in the fourth quarter.
Garoppolo, who lost a fumble on his first play, completed 17 of 25 passes for 314 yards. He threw a 78-yard touchdown pass to Samuel, who took advantage of cornerback Jeff Okudah’s knockdown, giving the Niners a 28-point lead midway through the third quarter.
Samuel finished with 189 yards, a career high. Rookie Elijah Miller, who took over from the injured Raheem Mostert, broke the tie with a 38-yard touchdown early in the second quarter and finished with 104 rushing yards.
In his Detroit debut, Jared Goff completed 38 of 57 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns and a costly interception.
