Daniil Medvedev and Emma Raducanu made history in the US Open 2021. Is that both players got at Flushing Meadows his first Grand Slam trophy on American soil. But how long has this not happened?
In 1990, the same was achieved by the Argentine Gabriela Sabatini and the American Pete Sampras. The former world number three lifted the trophy after beating Steffi Graf 6-2 7-6 (4) while the winner of 14 Grand Slam tournaments won that US Open after beating Andre Agassi 6-4 , 6-3 and 6-2.
After those consecrations, the one born in Buenos Aires won 12 more titles on the WTA circuit and was a finalist at Wimbledon in 1991. On the other hand, the American was the top Grand Slam tournament winner until 2009, when he was overtaken by Roger Federer.
