WASHINGTON (AP) – Sandy Alcantara allowed a hit in eight solid innings after pitching six two-thirds hitless innings and the Miami Marlins beat the Washington Nationals 3-0 on Monday night.
With two outs in the seventh inning, Josh Bell singled off the right-field fence to end the Dominican pitcher’s no-hitter attempt. The right-hander subsequently retired his next four foes to finish his job with seven strikeouts and no walks on 96 pitches.
Jesús Sánchez hit an RBI single in the first inning and Alex Jackson drove in two runs with a double in the ninth. Dylan Floro allowed a hit in the ninth for his 11th save.
Alcantara (9-13) pitched a perfect ball for five innings, but Keibert Ruiz reached base on second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s error to start the sixth inning.
In his previous start, the Dominican allowed one run and four hits in nine innings but went without a decision against the New York Mets, striking out 14 batters, the most of his career.
Panamanian Paolo Espino (4-5) allowed one run and six hits with three walks in six innings for Washington.
