Veteran Anthony Smith proved Saturday that he still has a lot of gas in his tank.
Smith defeated Ryan Spann by submission in the UFC Fight Night light heavyweight main event from Las Vegas for his third consecutive victory.
The 33-year-old Smith (36-16) opened 2020 with losses to number one challenger Glover Teixeira and another contender in Aleksandar Rakic. Nonetheless, the veteran has since recovered with impressive victories against Devin Clark and the sought-after prospect Jimmy Crute.
Spann (19-7), 30, suffered his second loss in his last three fights.
Smith, who lost to Jon Jones in 2019 when he challenged for the 205-pound title, entered the fight as the No. 6 fighter in the UFC light heavyweight rankings, naming Rakic as someone he wants to face next. Rakic defeated Smith in August 2020, and is No. 3 in weight.
205-pound champion Jan Blachowicz is scheduled to make his second defense of the light heavyweight title on October 30 against Teixeira at UFC 267.
